The shake, rattle and roll — of thunder

Fear of loud noises like rumbling thunder and exploding fireworks is a common problem in pets. With a little effort, you may be able to help your buddy beat this phobia.

Avoid punishment, fuss, or even sympathy when your pet gets rattled. These things tell dogs there’s a reason to be scared and inadvertently rewards them for their behavior. Instead, a little tough love is in order. Simply keeping your routine and ignoring the ruckus tells your pet that nothing is amiss.

Make sure your pet has a safe, familiar place to go to ride out the storm. Keep windows and doors covered and closed, so that your nervous Nellie doesn’t bolt through a pane of glass. Your vet may also suggest behavioral training to help reduce the quaking and shaking. Medications can help calm pets with severe jitters, but only under your vet’s direction.
