Herding Cats May Be Easier Than a Vet Visit

According to an old adage, a hard job is “as tough as herding cats.” As most owners know, this often describes taking cats to the veterinarian — one reason why many cats don’t see their vet often enough.

Why are cats so upset with the whole ordeal? Lots of reasons. Cats quickly learn that their travel crate can lead to strange smells, scary people and a slippery, cold exam table.

A few simple things can help kitty adjust. Try making the crate part of the furniture. Go for short rides just for fun. On vet trips, take along a towel or cat bed that smells familiar and can take the edge off that chilly exam table. Schedule your appointment during a slow time when barking dogs are less likely to be in the waiting room.

Planning ahead and practicing road trips can make the vet visit better for many frightened felines. And that makes purr-fect sense.
