They’ve been called convulsions, fits or apoplexy. But whatever you call it, a seizure is a scary thing.

During a seizure, dogs and cats stiffen, shake and often lose bladder control. The important thing to remember is not to panic.

We know from people who have seizures that they are not painful. Prevent accidental injury by placing your pet on a padded surface at ground level, and do not place anything in your pet’s mouth.

The spasms usually stop in less than a minute, but pets can remain disoriented and uncoordinated for an hour or more. If the shakes don’t stop or if they return quickly, seek immediate veterinary care.

Possible causes of seizures include liver disease, brain infection or cancer. Often, they are caused by epilepsy, an inherited condition that can be controlled with medication.

Seizures are serious and scary, but remember to keep calm. Your best friend needs you.
