Any Dog Can Bite

People often believe that their normally well-mannered family dog would never bite anyone. The sad fact is that any dog can bite in certain situations.

Nearly 5 million bites occur in the United States each year. And breeds with a reputation for being aggressive are not the only dogs committing these canine crimes. Even toy dogs can inflict a serious injury.

Never forget that all dogs operate on instinct that may tell them to fight back when frightened, surprised or treated disrespectfully. So it’s vital to closely supervise pets, especially around children. Ask the owner’s permission before petting a strange dog, and don’t reach through a fence or other barrier to pet a dog.

Obedience training, socialization and male neutering are also important parts of dog safety. Remember that responsible owners keep dogs and people as safe as possible.
