A pet celebration

May is National Pet Month, and in keeping with the celebration, the American Veterinary Medical Association has compiled a nine-step agenda highlighting responsible pet ownership.

Topping the list is keeping your pet healthy with the help of your vet. Regular exercise is a key component, but keep the leash on unless you’re in a fenced-in yard or leash-free park. Also be a good neighbor and clean up after your pooch. Obedience training is another responsible move that can ease stress on both you and your puppy.

Cats should be kept indoors for their welfare and that of small wild animals. Make sure to microchip your pet and keep the pet license current. Another tip? Spaying or neutering prevents unwanted animals and health problems. Finally, be sure to budget for potential emergencies.

In short, do your best to be the person your pet thinks you are.
