Commit to be fit

Commit to be fit

Mark Twain might have said, “I’m pushing 60, and that’s enough exercise for me,” but your veterinarian likely doesn’t apply that philosophy to your dog.

Regular exercise benefits your senior dog, first by keeping off pounds that can stress the heart and other organs. A dog’s joints also suffer wear and tear with age, and moderate exercise can actually help decelerate this degeneration. Exercise even helps your dog’s mental health by sending oxygen and glucose to the brain.

Your veterinarian can help design a workout around your senior dog’s needs. If you and your dog exercise together, slow down to your buddy’s gait, and don’t allow prolonged exercise in hot and humid weather. If your dog tires quickly, starts coughing, or has problems breathing, make sure to tell your veterinarian.

Take it slowly, but commit to be fit.
