Does your pet bring out the best in you?

Does your pet bring out the best in you?

The animal-human bond is one of the strongest relationships we have. For example, when a group of 9- to 12-year-olds was asked about the most important relationship in their lives, nearly half of them named a bond with their pet.

There is now evidence to support the power of this connection. In a recent study, youngsters who had pets or were involved in activities with animals scored higher when assessed for leadership, community service and time spent helping others compared to children who had no involvement with animals. This was especially so among children who were responsible for pet care at home. Caring for and developing an emotional attachment to an animal is also linked to positive feelings of self-esteem, as well as sympathy and empathy toward other animals and people.

It looks like maybe our pet connections really do bring out the best in us.
