Enriched environments

Enriched environments

Today’s zoos are infinitely better than the dismal concrete and wire boxes of yesteryear. A big difference is enrichment: the process of enhancing animal environments by taking cues from a species’ natural activity and habitat.

The goal of enrichment is to offer animals options so they use their minds and engage in their natural behavior. Enrichment is considered essential to an animal’s welfare.

Anything in an animal’s environment is fodder for enrichment. Natural social groupings are key to an animal’s welfare. Various surfaces, hiding spots, foliage and play objects can be incorporated along with differing textures, smells, sounds, sights and tastes. Foods with diverse shapes and textures can be hidden, scattered or even buried.

So next time you see a tire, a piñata or mirrors in a zoo enclosure, know there is method to the madness!
