Nailing a lifetime routine

Nailing a lifetime routine

Many cats try to run for the hills when the nail clipper comes out. But it doesn’t have to be that way if you train your kitten early on.

Start by sitting quietly with your kitty on your lap. Begin to massage your cat’s toes, one at a time, while extending the nail. Stop if your cat resists, and follow up with a treat.

Once your kitty learns this routine, enlist a friend to introduce the sound of the clipper. As you rub your kitten’s toes, ask your partner to clip something brittle, like dry pasta or a toothpick, near your cat’s nails. Finish by offering a treat.

When this becomes old hat, it’s time for the real thing. After a toe rub, clip your cat’s nail tip and offer a treat. Trim 1 or 2 nails a day until you’ve shortened them all.

Remember, patience is key, because once you’ve nailed this routine, it should last a lifetime.
