As a pet parent, you likely have a special bond with your veterinarian. So you may be surprised if he or she refers you to a specialist.

Some disorders require a certain level of know-how. Ask your veterinarian specifically why you’re being referred. Go over your pet’s diagnosis, treatment and prognosis and find out what the specialist offers in terms of additional expertise.

Before scheduling the appointment, make sure the specialist has received your pet’s records. Be ready to talk about your buddy’s history. During the appointment, ask questions about treatment and follow-up care. Remember, you can consult your primary veterinarian before going ahead with any recommendations.

Ask the specialist to update your veterinarian each step of the way. Then you’ll all be part of the team providing top-notch care for your furry friend.
