Dog on boat

Dog on boat

Dogs love wind in their faces, and what nicer way to experience fresh air than a boat ride?

But before you take your furry friend on a sail, have a plan. First, learn the laws involving dogs on boats — both where you are and where you’ll be going. Once legality is settled, get a doggy life jacket and let your pooch swim in it before the sail. Also, allow your dog to explore the docked boat ahead of time.

On the day of your outing, don’t forget the sunscreen (yes…. that’s sunscreen for dogs) and be ready to protect your buddy’s paws from a hot deck by lining it with wet towels. Have the first-aid kit stocked and pack plenty of water. Most importantly, be sure you have an emergency plan in case your dog goes overboard. Make that first outing a short one in case your pooch gets nauseous.

Here’s to smooth sailing — for you and your pal!
