Just take a hike

Just take a hike

If you and your hound want to just take a hike, here are some tips to heed before setting off.

Before anything else, ask your veterinarian if your pooch is fit for trekking. Also, make sure your dog is trained to heed your commands, which can literally be lifesaving.

Bring plenty of fresh water so your pooch isn’t tempted to drink from contaminated outdoor water sources. Treats also come in handy when your buddy needs a snack break.

Certain locales require special strategies. When hiking in treacherous territory — such as nearby fast-moving water or on a cliffside — keep your buddy in a harness and on a leash. If you’re riverside, steer clear of dead fish, which can be toxic if your pooch takes a bite. Don’t forget tick protection in wooded areas.

Lastly, take your cell phone in case of emergency. Then dial up a good time on the trail!
