Dog agility — a contest for all canines

If you’ve never experienced a dog agility competition, you have a treat in store. While each dog navigates an obstacle course, his agility and his handler’s talent for training are pitted against the clock. The only real requirements are energy, dexterity and a hound that loves to hustle.

Canine competitors are directed by their handlers over jumps, up ramps and through tunnels. They weave between poles and negotiate seesaws. And lest you think agility is only for purebred pooches, like Labs and German shepherds, you only need to see feisty little mutts soaring over pint-size hurdles to realize that this is a sport for all dogs.

Agility trials range from novice to championship levels, each with their own requirements. So if you have the time and a dog that loves to get up and go, there’s no better way to bond with your furry friend.
