Taking time to avert danger

Taking time to avert danger

When a natural disaster hits, having planned ahead can mean the difference between life and death. That includes preparations to keep your pet out of harm’s way.

Microchipping your buddy tops the list, since it’s often the only way to reunite lost pets with their families. Disasters often result in power outages and unreliable water supplies, so store at least two weeks’ worth of essentials, like water, food and medications, for your pet.

A carrier, leash and collar with an ID tag are other must-haves. A disaster kit should also include your pet’s photo and confirmation of vaccinations. And don’t forget food and water bowls.

Have an evacuation plan, including phone numbers and directions for pet shelters, veterinary clinics and friends. You may need to rely on one of them to provide your pet with a home away from home for the duration.
