Fending off equine respiratory infections

Fending off equine respiratory infections

Most respiratory infections are not life threatening, but they can wear down your horse and wreck a training schedule, which can set an aspiring athlete back. So preventing infection is the way to go.

First, be vigilant about your horse’s vaccinations. Ask your veterinarian for a schedule that covers your horse and meshes with the show or race calendar.

Show and race grounds can be teaming with germs, so use a disinfectant to wash down your horse’s temporary stall and barn equipment when you arrive. During your stay, also do your best to prevent your horse from nuzzling others.

Always make sure your horse’s surroundings are well ventilated, because dust, urine and chemicals irritate airways and increase the risk of infection. Scheduling rest times for your performing pal between shows or races will also help him fend off infection.
