Getting help for hoarders

We all know something about animal hoarding, yet many cases go unrecognized. Only by shedding light on this disorder can we help the animals and people who suffer from it.

For psychological reasons, hoarders often find it easier to connect with animals than people. They eventually have so many animals at home that even basic care becomes impossible. The animals suffer in the same squalid conditions as the hoarder who doesn’t notice that anything is wrong. Unless someone steps in, the situation spirals further out of control.

Once a hoarding case is identified, the animals are often rescued. But the hoarder is often left to repeat the same sequence of events. Recently, animal hoarding has been classified as a psychiatric illness, which will hopefully make treatment easier to access in order to break this vicious cycle.
