Pet meds: bargains close at hand

If you’re shopping for deals on your pet’s medications, you could opt to buy them from a grocery store, drugstore chain or online pharmacy instead of your veterinary clinic. But gather all the facts first.

For example, never buy prescription drugs from a pharmacy that says you don’t need a prescription. You never know what you’ll get. And if using a local pharmacy, don’t agree to prescription changes without your veterinarian’s input. Pharmacists mean well, but they may not know the unique ways that drugs and dosages differ between animals and people.

Some veterinary drug manufacturers guarantee their products only if purchased from a veterinarian. Your veterinary clinic may also offer manufacturer’s rebates, coupons or even free products.

Funny thing — the veterinary clinic seems like a pretty good bargain after all.
