Answering the angst of separation

Answering the angst of separation

All pooch parents love a warm welcome from their furry friends. But they also take comfort in knowing their canines cope well alone. However, for almost one-fifth of the pooch population, being apart from their favorite folks causes severe stress.

Most dogs with separation anxiety act out by whining or barking, while nearly as many become destructive. Up to one-third of these desperate dogs make messes or stop eating when their owners are away.

If your dog is scared to be alone, start by making sure he has a cozy place to settle in. If you know you’ll be leaving every day — for example, to go to work or school — accustom your dog to the routine early on. Dog walkers, pet sitters and doggie day care are also ways to help your canine feel secure.

If your buddy’s still bothered, ask your veterinarian for advice on calming the fears.
