You’re heading out of town, but this time your pet’s staying put. As you plan your creature’s comfort while you’re away, keep in mind that critical decisions may be called for.

Before you leave, make sure to authorize someone to act as your pet’s guardian in case you’re off the grid when a pet emergency arises. Let that person know which tests or treatments you’d agree to and what your financial or ethical limits are. Allow them access to your pet’s records and authorize payment arrangements for veterinary care. Above all, make sure you trust this person with life-and-death decisions if it should come to that.

To help ease your mind, put your authorization in writing and give a copy to your veterinary clinic. Then enjoy your trip and look forward to seeing your furry friend when you get back home.
