Horses in harm’s way

Horses in harm’s way

As the cost of food and shelter has skyrocketed over the past few years, so have the numbers of abandoned animals. The small guys may end up in shelters, but large critters often aren’t as lucky. And with the added complication of drought, the odds seem especially stacked against horses.

Stories of horses left behind in drought-ravaged fields are no longer rare. And as pastures dry up and get eaten down, these horses become malnourished, sick and eventually too weak to stand.

There are other options for horse owners in dire circumstances. First among them is contacting rescue organizations that provide the care, medical attention and training horses need. Once back on their feet, these animals can be placed in new homes.

Also do your part by contacting animal control if you suspect a horse has been abandoned.
