When you imagine retirement, are pets in the picture? These days, more and more people wonder how they can balance the joys of pet companionship with the responsibilities involved.

For some seniors, worries about money, less active lives or passing before their pet does discourage them from taking on the responsibility of pet ownership. But if an older adult still yearns for a pet, there are some pretty creative ways to bring potential buddies together.

Senior citizens may be able to foster animals or share a pet with several other families. Some programs bring pet therapy animals to homes, while others offer dog walking services or make house calls to care for pets at home.

If there’s a will, there appears to be a way to keep pets in our lives — no matter what our age.
