Chipping away for information

You’ve probably heard of microchips — those data chips placed under a pet’s skin that contain an owner’s contact information. But here are some chip-related facts that might be new to you.

While microchips have reunited many pets with their families, they should never replace identification tags. After all, the average person who finds a pet won’t have a microchip scanner.

And don’t think that having a microchip placed is the end of the story. Placement means you’re only halfway there. You need to register your information with the microchip company so the chip is connected to you. That also means updating your contact information if you move or get a new phone number.

Finally, don’t worry about the shelf life. Microchips are made to last an incredible 25 years. That’s plenty of time to facilitate many a reunion.
