Sounding the alarm on xylitol

As pet owners, it’s our job to guide our furry friends through what can seem like a minefield of potential poisons. We no sooner learn about one before another pops up.

The sweetener xylitol is harmless in people but can cause liver damage and dangerously low blood sugar levels in dogs. Initially found only in candies, gums and some toothpastes, xylitol is now being added to certain brands of peanut and other nut butters.

Most dogs love peanut butter treats, but devouring these brands can be tragic. So read ingredient labels carefully before making purchases. Xylitol is both a “natural sweetener” and a “sugar alcohol,” so either term should sound an alarm. Likewise, because it’s not a true sugar, the label “sugar-free” may be suspect.

Once you’ve got your pooch-friendly product in tow, you can both celebrate with a safe treat.
