We share a lot with our furry friends, but they really do deserve their own medications. After all, people and pets process drugs differently. Problem is, drugs made just for pets are rare. But there are changes in the works.

Animal-specific pharmaceutical startups are in the midst of a growth spurt. Investors are stepping up and manufacturing costs are falling. But the biggest push has come from pet owners seeking the best possible care for their four-legged family members.

Now, scientists with experience in biotechnology are using that knowledge to develop drugs for pets. Medications being developed range from state-of-the-art cancer therapy to pain medications and appetite stimulants.
