Reserving space in a safe haven

Reserving space in a safe haven

Before a hurricane or other natural disaster strikes, make sure you have an evacuation plan for your pets — just as you do for the rest of your family. Some folks assume that, if left with food and water, their pets will be fine until their families return. Unfortunately, that tactic has led to countless tragedies.

Additionally, don’t assume your pet will be welcomed into a kennel, emergency shelter or hotel. Find out which places accept pets and pre-register to save a space before you need it. If all such doors are closed, ask friends or family along your proposed evacuation route if they’d be willing to care for your pet until you get settled.

Of course, you’ll also need to bring food, water, a collar and leash and a comfy travel crate. But knowing there’s a pet-friendly destination ahead will put your mind at ease.
