Problems with gifting pets

It’s that time of year again: the season when folks are tempted to give pets as presents. But think carefully before you act, because choosing a pet is a very personal decision.

First of all, never buy a pet present on impulse. Your decision translates into a long-term responsibility that will impact the recipient’s lifestyle. Likewise, don’t gift a pet unless you know for certain that your friend or family member wants and is able to care for one.

A less impulsive but equally thoughtful gift might be a “pet starter kit,” which includes pet food, accessories and toys. That way, you can pave the way for a pet but leave the decision up to your recipient. Another option is to pay a shelter’s adoption fee ahead of time. If your special someone decides not to get a pet, you’ve still contributed to a good cause.
