Countering coyotes

Countering coyotes

Where coyotes once hid away in the western United States, now they roam nationwide — sometimes even through our neighborhoods. And as their numbers have increased, so have attacks on our pets and backyard animals. Here are some ways to keep coyotes at bay.

Bird feeders and food bowls are coyote magnets — as are unsecured chicken coops, garbage or compost bins and grills. Even fallen fruit or garden scraps can tempt a hungry coyote. So lock up these lures and keep your yard clean.

While it’s best never to leave pets alone outdoors, some still play in enclosed outside spaces. So be sure fences are sufficiently high and buried in the ground to prevent coyote entry. And keep pets close by on walks, especially through wooded areas.

Coyotes have to eat too — but you don’t have to invite them to dinner in your yard.
