Flu news for pets

We all know how the flu can spread among people like wildfire. But can you give your flu to your pet as well?

The risk of that happening is very low, but it’s not nonexistent. Flu — that is, influenza — viruses are masters at mutating then jumping from one species to another. So a viral disease that started in one species may eventually spread to another that hasn’t developed immunity to it. Whereas most shared, or zoonotic, diseases jump from animals to humans, a few can go in the other direction. For example, ferrets are very susceptible to the human flu, and it’s been reported in some cats too.

To be on the safe side when you have the flu, wash your hands frequently and try not to cough or sneeze on your furry friend. And of course, always keep an eye on your pet for signs of illness.
