Feline feedings

If you’re getting a cat, let me tell you about the two ways you can feed your new buddy.

With free feeding, food is left in a bowl or inside food toys for cats to eat at their leisure. This method only works with dry food, since canned diets can spoil when left out. With free feeding, you’re not on the clock. Many cats like it because they can eat at their own pace or “hunt” their food during the day. But some cats overeat and gain weight. And in homes with several cats, one may bully the others away from the food.

Scheduled feedings let you control portions. This method is best for cats who need to lose weight or get medicine with food. But you need to be home in time for feedings—and that can mean several times a day in some cases.

With pros and cons to each method, ask your veterinarian which might work best for you and your cat.
