Gearing up for a hike

Gearing up for a hike

Before you and your pooch hit the trails, you’ll need to prepare for the comfort of two.

You may need to start by upgrading your tent size so your dog can share your digs. A mat of closed-cell foam under a half-size comforter makes a cozy dog bed. Of course, your pooch will need plenty of food and water as well as collapsible bowls for each.

Some dogs strengthen their footpads during training, but it doesn’t hurt to bring dog booties for tough climbs. While you’re at it, bring spares, since your buddy’s bound to lose one or two. You’ll need a towel to clean your dog and maybe another to cool your pooch. And bring a safety light to keep tabs on your dog when he’s tending to his business at night.

Finally, don’t leave home without a doggie first-aid kit—and information on when and how to use it.
