Learning to prevent leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that can strike pets, especially dogs. It can also be transmitted from animals to people. While it used to be rare, leptospirosis is diagnosed more often these days. Here’s what you can do to help protect your pet.

Animals with leptospirosis pass the bacteria in their urine. Rodents are notorious carriers, so rodent control is a must. Once the bacteria contaminate water or soil, they can survive for months. Most pets are infected after contact with animal tissues or water contaminated by wild animals.

These days, many veterinarians recommend that dogs be vaccinated annually against leptospirosis. Ask your veterinarian if this is a good idea for your furry friend—particularly if your pooch loves the good ol’ outdoors.
