Opting out of close shaves

If you’ve seen startling shots of dogs with whole-body shaves, you might be wondering if such a drastic move is ever a good idea.

The answer is usually no — especially when a dog has a double coat. These breeds — like huskies and many of their working and herding cousins — have a woolly, insulating undercoat topped by long, waterproof guard hairs. This combination serves a protective function, much like the insulation and walls of a house. Without such protection in the summer, double-coated breeds can overheat and get sunburned.

But if a dog is severely matted, a full-body shave may be the best option. Keep in mind, however, that once shaved, fur may not grow back the same way, or it can take a long time to do so. That’s why routine brushing and grooming are essential in caring for dogs with double coats.
