Wanted: a pet-worthy sitter

Finding the right pet sitter can feel overwhelming, unless you take it a step at a time.

Start by contacting your veterinarian, local humane association or organizations like Pet Sitters International or the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters.

Next, schedule a phone interview to hear what your candidate knows about common pet problems. That’s also the time to discuss your own pet’s medical needs, if any.

Then, invite the person over to meet your pet, keeping an eye on their chemistry while you discuss expectations.

Finally, compose a simple contract. Include contact information for a friend and your veterinarian, as well as directives stating the extent of care you request if your pet needs medical attention.

You can touch base with the sitter when you’re away — just to ease your mind that your fur baby is in good hands.
