The hazards of hiking

Before setting out on a hike with your canine companion, be aware of the possible perils.

One you can easily avoid is overdoing it. If your dog is breathing heavily, exhausted or limping even after breaks, it’s time to call it a day. You can fend off heatstroke by providing plenty of water, using cooling collars and making the most of the shade. Just be sure you treat any fresh water for both of you.

Certain wild plants can pose a problem, too, so stop your dog from chewing anything you don’t know is safe. Foxtails can be dangerous. These barbed seed heads can catch on sensitive areas or be inhaled. If your pooch is shaking his head, sneezing or pawing at his face, it’s time to call it quits and seek veterinary care.

Keep a close eye on your pooch and have a contingency plan should hazards rise up during your hike.
