Stay calm and carry on—for your pet’s sake

If your pet will be flying with you onboard a commercial airline, here are some ways to up the comfort quotient.

Most pets don’t like to wet their carrier, but it happens. So, line the crate with an absorbent material that draws away moisture. Also, it’s best not to feed your furry friend for several hours before the flight. That way, he’s less apt to dirty the carrier or have motion sickness.

Some animals are frightened by feet passing by at eye level, so cover the carrier with a light throw. It also helps to tire your pet before travel by playing or going for a walk. Then he’s more apt to sleep for much of the trip. Veterinarians generally discourage sedating pets for travel because it can put them at risk of cardiorespiratory emergencies.

Just remember, during your flight the goal is to stay calm — for your carry-on.
