The highs and lows of medical marijuana

With all the discussion of medical marijuana, pet parents might wonder how the talk could apply to their furry friends.

Unlike THC — or the high-inducing part of the cannabis plant — cannabidiol, or CBD, is being studied for its medical potential in people. In some cases, CBD appears to dull chronic pain, reduce anxiety and quell seizures.

This interest has led some companies to market CBD for animal use, too. But such products haven’t undergone clinical trials, and none is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. What’s more, state licensing agencies don’t permit veterinarians to prescribe these agents, and owners who get them in other ways can be in legally hazardous territory.

Talk with your veterinarian if you have questions. Meanwhile, keep pets away from marijuana because ingesting THC can result in dangerous intoxication.
