Facts on frogs

Frogs can make good pets for some folks. But the capture of wild frogs for the pet trade has pushed them to the point of extinction. So, if you’re thinking of getting a frog, first make sure it has been locally bred in captivity.

And before you make the leap, remember that frogs have long life spans — up to 15 years or so. So you need to be in it for the long haul. That means keeping your buddy’s enclosure super clean and being prepared to handle bugs — lots of them. Nothing says dinner to a frog like an insect meal — unless it’s snacking on a pinkie mouse.

If you want an active or cuddly pet, a frog isn’t for you. But if you can love an amphibian on its own terms, choose a species you can accommodate. Then set up the tank — fine-tuning water, humidity and temperature requirements — before bringing your wide-mouthed froggy home.
