Many pet lovers buy the highest quality pet food possible. But for those of us whose pets have chronic health problems, therapeutic diets can make a real difference. These are prescription diets that require oversight by a veterinarian.

For example, dogs with significant kidney disease may benefit from diets with low total protein levels but a high-quality protein ingredient. There are low-fat diets for pets prone to pancreatitis — that is, inflammation of the pancreas — and high-protein, low-carb diets for diabetics.
