Treating pets through dinner

Many pet lovers buy the highest quality pet food possible. But for those of us whose pets have chronic health problems, therapeutic diets can make a real difference. These are prescription diets that require oversight by a veterinarian.

For example, dogs with significant kidney disease may benefit from diets with low total protein levels but a high-quality protein ingredient. There are low-fat diets for pets prone to pancreatitis — that is, inflammation of the pancreas — and high-protein, low-carb diets for diabetics. There are even diets formulated to help prevent and possibly dissolve certain bladder stones, advance brain health or improve joint function. And that’s just the beginning.

When your pet goes in for a checkup, talk with your veterinarian about nutrition. It’s a key part of your buddy’s health.
