Tales of tails gone limp

A dog’s tail is incredibly versatile. It signals feelings, gives warnings — even provides balance. So, what if your pooch’s tail acutely went limp?

In many dogs with so-called dead tail, the entire tail goes limp. In others, it’s just the free end. Some dogs seem in pain, while others aren’t that bothered. Any dog can get dead tail, but it’s most common in pointers, retrievers and hounds. Working dogs, especially young ones, are especially prone.

The cause of dead tail hasn’t been confirmed, but it may involve sprained or strained tail muscles. Overuse of the tail is often blamed — for example from swimming, when the tail is used for balance. Exposure to cold may also be a factor.

Most dogs recover after a few days of rest. Meanwhile, you can help prevent dead tail by gradually conditioning your dog before rigorous activity.
