Telemedicine for pets

Telemedicine for pets

Following in the footsteps of human telemedicine, there are now a number of internet sites where pet parents can get veterinary advice. There’s no doubt that such services are convenient when time is of the essence. But just how do they work?

Some of these sites let you speak directly to a veterinarian for a charge. Others come with an annual fee that allows unlimited texting to a veterinarian.

But there are limitations. For example, a veterinarian who has never seen your pet cannot prescribe medications. And if your pet’s condition seems serious, your best bet is always to go directly to your veterinarian or an emergency service.

Always ask a consulting veterinarian about their credentials. And remember, nothing takes the place of a real — not a virtual — physical examination.
