Walking the dog

Walking the dog

If you’re a dog walker — whether personally or professionally — you’re now responsible for two: you and your pooch pal. And anything can happen in the blink of an eye.

If this is more than a one-off event, start by protecting yourself against injuries and liability. You might want to ask for legal and insurance advice, then stay alert and use your head when out on walks.

As for the well-being of your canine charge, work out an agreement with the owner ahead of time about how to handle emergencies. Always be sure to carry contact information for the dog’s regular veterinarian and the local emergency clinic.

It also helps to know the ABCs of basic first aid. But nothing takes the place of prevention, like avoiding dust-ups with other dogs and staying away from dangerous environments and tempting treats.
