Debugging parasites

Debugging parasites

Livestock producers and horse owners face the constant problem of parasite resistance to dewormers. So, what’s a farmer to do?

Resistance develops when parasites are continuously exposed to the same drug. Some parasites become impervious to that treatment and it no longer works.

The important thing to remember is that every farm’s parasite situation is unique. That’s why it’s so important to have your veterinarian come out and assess your farm’s risks. A pre- and post-dewormer count of parasite eggs in manure samples can tell the story.

Although it seems counterintuitive, the goal is not to have a parasite-free farm. Instead, you want to be sure the products that you use remain effective. It happens by using dewormers responsibly, rotating pastures and cleaning up after your animals.

That’s how you corral parasites on your farm.
