Exercise for busy bees

Exercise for busy bees

The American Heart Association recommends healthy adults get 150 minutes of moderate activity every week. When you’re balancing long hours at work and family responsibilities, carving out time for exercise may be difficult. Fortunately, recent studies show light activities reap plenty of health benefits.

With that in mind, here are five ways to sneak exercise into your day without dedicating too much time.

First, sweat before you shower. A 10-minute high-intensity routine can increase your endurance and strengthen your muscles. An easy routine is 10 squats, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, 10 lunges, 10 bicycle crunches and 10 jumping jacks. Repeat three times for a full workout.

The second way to sneak in exercise is by walking at work. Bring an extra pair of tennis shoes to the office, and take a 15- to 20-minute power walk in the afternoon or during your lunch break. You’ll increase your step count for the day and, by stepping away from your desk, release stress.

Third, do chores. Physically demanding chores like vacuuming the floors, dusting the furniture and mowing the lawn burn calories.

Fourth, be active while watching TV. Many of us stay on the couch while watching our favorite show, but that’s an optimal opportunity to sneak in exercise! Do lunges, crunches or squats during commercial breaks.

Finally, walk your dog. Walking your dog is a great way for both of you to get extra activity. Don’t have a pooch? Maybe it’s time to adopt a furry pal from your local shelter.

Short bursts of activity are easier to work into a busy bee’s day. Find creative ways to sneak in extra steps to energize your body and feel healthier.
