DBS

Description:
University of Florida doctors perform a deep brain stimulation procedure. DBS was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for patient use in 2002. It involves mapping the brain and strategically implanting small electrodes. Eventually, with additional operations, the electrodes are connected to a small, battery-powered unit implanted in the patient’s shoulder area that provides electrical stimulation. The stimulation alters brain activity without destroying brain tissue, thereby combating symptoms of disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. (Photo by sarah Kiewel/University of Florida)
